How Trauma Therapy Helps

A trauma-informed, nervous-system based approach

We move at a pace that feels safe for you. Depending on your needs, therapy may focus on:

  • Processing distressing memories at a pace that feels safe

  • Reducing the emotional charge connected to past events

  • Calming an overwhelmed or dysregulated nervous system

  • Building safety and trust before diving into difficult material

  • Identifying how trauma responses show up in daily life

  • Strengthening resilience, self-trust, and connection

We draw on approaches like EMDR, Sand Tray Therapy, and the Safe & Sound Protocol β€” chosen based on what fits you, not a one-size-fits-all protocol.

What Is Trauma

Not just the event β€” how it stays with you

Trauma isn't only about what happened β€” it's about how your nervous system responded, and how that response can linger long after the event itself is over. Many clients come to us saying things like:

I feel like I'm still living in that moment.

Certain things trigger me and I don't know why.

I have a hard time trusting people.

My body reacts before I even realize what's happening.

I just want to feel safe in my own life again.

Common Symptoms

Trauma can show up in a lot of different ways

Some people experience mostly mental or emotional symptoms, while others feel trauma primarily in their body.

  • Hypervigilance, feeling "on guard"

Physical

  • Chronic tension or pain
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Fatigue
  • Digestive or somatic symptoms

Behavioral

Types of Trauma We Treat

You don't need a formal diagnosis to start

Many clients simply know that something from the past still affects them today β€” and they want help changing that.

  • Single-incident trauma (accidents, assault, medical events)
  • Complex or developmental trauma
  • Childhood trauma & adverse experiences
  • Relational & attachment trauma
  • Grief-related trauma
  • Medical trauma
  • Racial & identity-based trauma
  • Vicarious or secondary trauma
Trauma & Relationships

Trauma doesn't stay contained to the past

It often shows up in relationships in ways that are hard to name in the moment. We frequently work with individuals and couples where trauma is a central factor, even if it isn't initially identified as such.

  • Difficulty trusting a partner
  • Fear of vulnerability or closeness
  • Overreacting to perceived threats in the relationship
  • Shutting down during conflict
  • Struggling to feel safe even with a caring partner

Trauma Therapy for Adults

Processing the past so it stops running the present

Adult trauma can come from a single event or build up over years β€” a difficult childhood, a painful relationship, a loss, or something that's hard to put into words. Many adults carrying trauma are still high-functioning, but internally on edge, guarded, or exhausted from managing it alone.

Therapy for adult trauma may include: EMDR to help reprocess distressing memories, building nervous-system regulation skills, working through shame or self-blame, rebuilding trust in yourself and others, and reconnecting with a sense of safety in daily life.

Trauma in Children & Teens

It can look different than it does in adults

Trauma in younger clients may show up as regression, irritability, clinginess, trouble at school, or big reactions that seem to come out of nowhere. We work with children and teens using age-appropriate, trauma-informed approaches, and collaborate closely with caregivers when needed.

Good to know: for younger clients we often use Play Therapy and Sand Tray Therapy alongside EMDR and the Safe & Sound Protocol, since kids frequently process trauma through play and sensory experience before they can put it into words.

Healing is possible.

Living with unprocessed trauma can be exhausting β€” but you don't have to navigate it alone. If you're ready to begin trauma therapy in Houston or online anywhere in Texas, we're here to help.
